Oolong tea extract has 'huge potential' in breast cancer prevention

American scientists believe that oolong tea extract has "great potential" in preventing breast cancer. Lab tests have shown that Chinese tea, which has been thought to have health benefits for centuries, stopped the growth of breast cancer cells. The researchers found that the extract blocked the DNA of cancer cells, inhibiting tumor growth and progression. Scientists say green tea has a similar effect. However, black and dark tea had little effect on cells.

Scientists at St. Louis University in Missouri also analyzed breast cancer and breast cancer mortality in China. Their analysis found that the prevalence of the disease was generally lower in areas with high consumption of oolong tea. Looking at the data from the 2014 annual report of the Cancer Registry of China and Fujian Province, it was found that the incidence of breast cancer in Fujian Province was 35% lower than the national average; the incidence of breast cancer among the people who drank the most oolong tea was 25% lower than the Fujian average. 50% lower than the national average. According to the research team, oolong tea holds promise as a non-toxic way to prevent breast cancer.

People who regularly drink oolong tea also appear to have lower mortality rates, according to findings published in the journal Anti-Cancer Research, with those who regularly drink oolong tea in Fujian 68 percent lower than the national average.

The researchers, led by Dr. Chunfa Huang of Saint Louis University School of Medicine, examined the effects of oolong tea extract on six breast cancer cell lines. From the findings, oolong tea, like green tea, plays an important role in inhibiting the growth, proliferation and tumor progression of breast cancer cells. Both of them can induce DNA damage and division, and have inhibitory effects on the growth, proliferation and tumorigenesis of breast cancer cells, and are a potential anti-breast cancer drug. Cells treated with black tea and black tea extract showed no or very little effect.
